Fundamentals of Fetal Monitoring (FoFM) Course

   This course is intended for RN's whose hospitals are part of the Illinois Regionalized Perinatal Program.
   This course is offered to the novice registered nurses with at least two weeks to less than one
    year of fetal monitoring experience at the time of class.
Our primary goal is to have the learner able
    to identify a reassuring FHR tracing and a non-reassuring FHR tracing and the appropriate intervention
    to each and to complete the course with the basic knowledge of fetal monitoring using the approved 
    NICHD Terminology
.


Learning Outcome

​Course Objectives

As a result of participating in this activity, learners will be able to report > 20% increase in knowledge of maternal-fetal physiology; instrumentation, application, assessment and documentation of fetal monitoring; and intervention of intrauterine resuscitation when abnormal tracings are observed.


  • Describe fetal monitoring baseline characteristics using the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) terminology and criteria
  • Differentiate characteristics of Category I, II, and III patterns
  • Explain the instrumentation for fetal heart and uterine activity monitoring
  • Explain various methods of antepartum testing
  • Discuss the common nursing interventions related to FHR patterns and related maternal physiology
  • Discuss the components of nursing documentation and communication

By completing the Fundamental of Fetal Monitoring (FOFM) registration, you are attesting to:
- completing the 45 minutes of pre-work sent out to you with your confirmation email before the course to obtain the CE’s
- confirmations and pre-work, is sent 3 to 7 days before the course
- attending the full class to receive CE credits
​- pass the post-test with 80% or higher score
- having a computer with video camera and speakers and remain logged on with my camera on for the duration of the course
- participating in all portions of the program including learner questions, strip reviews, discussions, case studies and completion of the posttest & evaluation
- not sharing the course access link with others, registration is required to receive the link
- understanding that all courses are subject to change or cancellation by the host perinatal center
- Total CE’s for per-work and in-person course will be 6.5
